How do I set up a form so that the recipient is not shown on the source code (and why would I want to do that)? |
|
|
Answer:
Any time you have an email address on your website, it is a prime target for email harvesting robots which are used by many spammers to collect email addresses. In most form mailers, this is a hidden field (in other words viewers of your webpage can not see it ON the page), but the robots can still find it (and so can anyone else who looks at your source code). Thus, you will minimize the chance of getting on some spammer's list by not having your email address where they can see it.
This is not difficult to do if you know a little bit about programming. However, explaining what to change in the form mailer script would be rather long. Soooooo, the easiest way to do that is to contact Artful Illusions, and we will do it for you (takes maybe 3 minutes) at no charge. You will need to have a separate form mailer for each form (if they go to different email addresses) on your site.

How do I upload pages? |
|
|
Answer:
You will need an ftp client, such as WS_FTP (http://www.wsftp.com/products/index.html), cuteFTP (http://www.globalscape.com/products/fms.asp) or SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/). Each of these can be purchased online and SmartFTP even has a free version.
In your ftp client, enter the ftp information in the right places and connect. Once connected, all your pages should go in the mainwebsite_html folder. |

How do I put a counter on my web page(s)? |
|
|
Answer:
First, click on the following link to find the style of counter you would like Counter Examples
and notice that each one contains the coding for that counter. The counter program takes quite a long time to install, so Artful Illusions simply allows you to use the one that is already installed for our site. All you will need to change in the line of code is the filename-#.dat file name
You will need to use a separate filename for each page that you want a counter on, and they must be site specific names. In other words, use your-domain-home.dat instead of the more generic home.dat when naming the files.
If you prefer, Artful Illusions will put the code on your pages for the counter you choose at no charge.

How do I password protect a directory? |
|
|
Answer:
Since these directions are rather lengthy, we have created a separate page to explain the process of protecting a directory. Since the directions depend on whether or not your site has FrontPage extensions enabled, please click on the appropriate link below that applies to your site.
Note 1: To determine whether FrontPage extensions are enabled for your site, click Site Information on the System Menu, then check whether FrontPage is shown as available in the Services and Options section of the Configuration window.
Note 2: If you do not have FrontPage extensions enabled, Artful Illusions will be happy to do this for you at no charge.
Click the link below for the directions for protecting directories via the Site Administration Panel

I uploaded some files for storage with my FTP client, how do I retrieve them?? |
|
|
Answer:
- Connect to your site via FTP
- Locate the file(s) you want
- Drag them to the "local" directory on your computer where you want to to be saved.
- If you want to let others download the files, without giving them the ftp password, you will have to give them the exact URL of where the file is located. For example, suppose you uploaded a text file called "my-fav-recipes.txt into a folder called 'recipes'. If you would like to let your friends and family download it, the URL would be: http://www.yourdomain.com/recipes/my-fav-recipes.txt (this will open in their browser and they can then save it to their hard drive).

How do I make a web page? |
|
|
Answer:
There are basically three ways to get a web page.
1. Using a web page builder program,
2. Hand-coding the html by hand, one line at a time or
3. Hiring a web design company, such as Artful Illusions Web Creations and Hosting, to build it for you.
Many of the web page builder programs are quite sophisticated (and many are not very user friendly for a new user). If this is your first website, a good (free) place to start would be Netscape Composer which comes with the Netscape browser. Although this is not a full featured web design program, it is quite simple to learn to use and fills the needs of many first time web page designers.
